Hughes, Conner Smoke Hens in Game Two Victory

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Karlee Hughes blasted her first two career home runs, and Caroline Conner tossed a two-hitter as College of Charleston gained a split with a 4-2 win over Delaware in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Patriots Point.

The Blue Hens won the opener, 7-5, and the teams will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday. The game is scheduled for noon but may be played earlier in the day due to the threat of inclement weather in the afternoon.

Hughes gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the first, and put them back ahead, 3-2, with a two-run bomb in the fifth. Kelli Anne Carter provided an insurance run with an RBI single in the sixth.

Hughes is the first Cougar to homer twice in a game since Lexee Emanuel did so against Jacksonville State in 2020.

Conner was dominant in winning for the third time, retiring the first nine Blue Hens before allowing two unearned runs in the fourth. She struck out a season-high seven and allowed only a two-out walk in the fifth over the final three innings.

The Cougars also hit a pair of home runs in game one. Shealyn Starks hit a solo shot in the second, and Carter gave Charleston a 3-2 lead in the third with a two-run homer, the first of her career.

Delaware rallied for five in the fifth and held off a Cougar comeback bid in the sixth.
