CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston softball team defeated Hampton 5-2 Sunday afternoon to mark the Cougars' first series sweep of the season.
Veteran pitcher
Payton Lemire shut down the Pirate offense for the second straight day, only allowing one earned run alongside five strikeouts in seven innings.
Hampton struck first in the third inning with a bases loaded single, but the Cougars responded quickly in the bottom of the frame.
Mia Dittoe and
Kayla Gutierrez hit back-to-back doubles followed by
Aniz Roman's single to left field that drove in the tying run. Roman finished the day 3-3 with two RBI.
Charleston's bats lit up in the fifth and sixth innings behind two RBI from
Karlee Hughes and one each from
Shealyn Starks and Roman. The Cougar offense combined for a season-high 11 hits in the win.

The Cougars return to action April 5 when they travel across town to face Charleston Southern. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the CSU Softball Complex.
