Cougars Drop Pitching Duel to Coastal Carolina

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Payton Lemire limited a strong Coastal Carolina lineup to just six hits while striking out six in a 2-0 loss to the Chanticleers on Monday at Patriots Point.
Lemire blanked Coastal on three hits until Delaney Keith hit a solo homer down the right field line with one out in the sixth. The Chants added an insurance run in the seventh and then held off a Cougar comeback attempt in the bottom of the inning.
Shealyn Starks walked to start the Charleston half of the seventh and moved to second on a base hit by Malaka Belser, but Raelee Brabham retired the last three Cougars to leave the tying runs on base.
Karlee Hughes broke up Brabham's no-hit bid with a two-out single in the sixth.
Lemire continued her stretch of strong pitching, allowing only 22 hits and two earned runs with 19 strikeouts over 28 innings while tossing four straight complete games. She has moved into eighth place in the CAA with an ERA of 2.80.
