Charleston Draws Utah in NCAA Tournament First Round

12/1/2024 6:54:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – College of Charleston volleyball will face No. 4 seeded Utah on Dec. 5 at 9:30 p.m. eastern time in the first round of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament, as the NCAA announced the 64-team field Sunday evening on ESPN.

The Cougars will make their tenth NCAA appearance, all coming in the last 23 years, and third under head coach Jason Kepner. CofC earned the automatic bid on Nov. 23 after beating Delaware in five sets in the 2024 CAA Championship match, the program's ninth conference title. Charleston earned an at-large berth in 2017, the first time in CAA history.

Charleston heads to the national tournament with an eight-match winning streak and overall record of 25-8, its most victories in a campaign since 2017. The College finished conference play 15-3, winning the regular season championship. 2024 is the seventh time in program history the Cougars won both the regular season and conference championships in the same year.

The Cougars will face the Utes for the first time in program history. Olivia Mae Van Der Werff will face her older sister, Amelia, who is a graduate student on Utah's roster.

Charleston is led by CAA Libero of the Year Tynley Smeltzer, All-CAA First Team honorees Emily Banitt and Caitlyn Callahan and CAA Tournament MOP Allie Holland. Deanna Dollar and Hannah Scott also garnered CAA All-Tournament Team honors.
