Cougars Fall at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The College of Charleston men's basketball team fell 84-70 at Monmouth on Saturday afternoon. The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for the Cougars.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams started the game with points in the paint before falling cold for nearly three minutes on both sides. Charleston went on a 7-0 run after the drought thanks to more paint work from Ante Brzovic and a Deywilk Tavarez trey.
  • Monmouth went on a 9-0 run of their own to take a 19-14 lead with eight minutes in the first half. A flurry of triples from Tavarez, CJ Fulton, and Derrin Boyd tied the contest back up at 27-27 with four minutes to play.
  • Charleston held Monmouth scoreless from the field for the final two and a half minutes of play before Boyd hit a three at the buzzer to send the Cougars into the locker room up 38-35.
  • The Hawks started the second half on a 9-0 run to go up 44-38 before taking their largest lead of the game 51-43 with 14 minutes remaining.
  • Down by as much as 19, Charleston cut the lead to ten at 76-66 with two minutes to play but could not complete the comeback.
KEY COUGARS
  • Tavarez led Charleston with 20 points and nine rebounds.
  • Boyd (14), Brzovic (11), and Lazar Djokovic (10) rounded out the double figure scorers. Djokovic added seven rebounds.
GAME NOTES
  • Monmouth outshot Charleston from the field 51% to 34%
  • This is the second consecutive and third time this season the Cougars have ended the first half on a buzzer beater three.
UP NEXT
  • Charleston, now  13-4, will travel to Campbell to face the Camels on January 16. Action is set for 7:00 p.m. in Buies Creek.
