Cougars Rally Late to Post Walk-Off Win Over FGCU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Jay Wrightsman hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to complete a College of Charleston comeback from a five-run deficit in an 8-6 victory over Florida Gulf Coast at the Dugout Club Classic in Tallahassee. The Cougars dropped their opening game to Mercer, 4-1.

Mercer Game
  • Mackenzie Mathis held Mercer without a hit through three innings before the Bears scored four unearned runs in the fourth.
  • Mathis struck out three in 3.2 innings. Lily Thorpe pitched 2.2 shutout innings, and Ryley Kutter retired the final two batters to escape a bases loaded jam.
  • The Cougars loaded the bases in the fourth, including a double by Sierra Paradis, but were unable to score before breaking through in the sixth.
  • Kaytlin Stacey singled and scored on a base hit by Kennedy Rhue, her second of the game.
FGCU Game
  • The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the second on a sacrifice fly by Karlee Hughes before the Eagles scored three in the third.
  • Charleston trailed 6-1 before storming back in the sixth, loading the bases on singles by Julia Sitterding, Jay Wrightsman and Karly Smith.
  • Bricelyn Bedenbaugh followed with her first career hit and RBI, and Kaytlin Stacey had a sacrifice fly to bring Charleston within 6-3.
  • Rhue continued her hot hitting with an RBI double to make it 6-4, another run scored on a ground out and Hughes tied it up with a single.
  • That set the stage for the drama in the seventh. Sitterding led off with a single and Wrightsman walked it off with her first home run as a Cougar.
  • The Cougars had a season-high 10 hits, including two by Wrightsman, Smith and Sitterding.
  • Campbell Schaen pitched a scoreless top of the seventh and earned her first career victory.
  • Rhue was making her sixth straight start and has six hits and four RBI over that span.
