MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.: The College of Charleston men's golf team returns to action this week after nearly a month hiatus at the General James Hackler Championship March 16-18 hosted by Coastal Carolina.
The Cougars are coming off a 12th place finish at the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue. Charleston shot a 7-under 281 round on the last day of the tournament, sinking 22 birdies. Kieron van Wyk led the Cougars at T16 (-6), recording five birdies, followed by Nevill Ruiter at T36 (-2). Ruiter's 69 in the final round ties van Wyk's first round score for the lowest Charleston round of the tournament. Tim Bertenbreiter played a 2-under final round to finish T55 (+1).
The ranked No. 45 Cougars will face No. 1 Auburn, Furman, No. 19 Duke, Kent State, Liberty, ETSU, High Point, Missouri, North Florida, Wake Forest, Louisville, NC State, Baylor, Coastal Carolina, and Nevada in Myrtle Beach.
The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones in 1948, and since has hosted several PGA Tour Championships. The championship is named in honor of James F. Hackler Jr., who was a major general in the United States Air Force, a pioneer of the Grand Strand's golf industry, and longtime supporter of Coastal Carolina University.
