MT. PLEASANT, S.C. –
Ryley Kutter and
Mackenzie Mathis turned in a pair of outstanding efforts in the circle to spark College of Charleston to a doubleheader sweep of UNCW and a CAA series victory.
Kutter allowed only four hits and no earned runs in a 2-1 victory in game one. Mathis followed by blanking the Seahawks, 1-0, on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts with Charleston winning in the eighth on a wild pitch.
The Cougars have won seven of their last eight overall and have captured both CAA series to stand 5-1 in conference play.
Game 1
- Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the third when Jay Wrightsman singled and scored on a double by Sierra Paradis.
- UNCW tied it in the fourth before the Cougars broke the deadlock an inning later.
- Wrightsman got the winning rally started with her second hit, stole second and scored when Samantha Horn got into a rundown between first and second.
- The Seahawks put the tie run on base to start the seventh before Kutter set down the final three batters.
Game 2
- The nightcap featured a classic pitcher's duel with neither team scoring in the regulation seven.
- The Cougar defense was instrumental in keeping UNCW off the scoreboard in the late innings.
- Wrightsman made a diving catch to thwart a rally in the seventh, and Kaytlin Stacey threw out a runner at third to end the eighth.
- Halle Cannon was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the eighth and pinch runner Audri Bates stole second.
- Following a Wrightsman single, Bates raced home on a wild pitch to complete the sweep.
