CHARLESTON, S.C. - Before Tynley Smeltzer walked across the Cistern as a College of Charleston graduate, she firmly cemented her name as one of the Cougar greats in not one, but two Charleston programs.
The Savannah, Ga., native was a four-year member of both the indoor and beach volleyball programs. She ended her career on the court as a 2x CAA Libero of the Year, eighth all-time in career digs per set (3.27), seventh all-time in career digs (1,560), and eighth all-time in Rally-Scoring Era digs in a season (551).
"Volleyball was just something I stuck with because I loved the community around it", said Smeltzer.
She surpassed 1,500 career digs on Nov. 15 against Northeastern, becoming the eighth player in program history to reach that milestone. It was the second-to-last home game of Smeltzer's career during senior weekend, and a goal she had been working toward all season.
"It was so rewarding to then celebrate it with all the seniors and finish off with the people I had been around for four years."
She ended her career in the sand with 46 total wins, the 13th most in program history, and ranks second all-time in program history 31 wins on court 4.
Although her time in a Charleston uniform has come to an end, the sense of community will be what she remembers most.
"At the end of the day volleyball is just a sport", said Smeltzer. "It's about the four years you get with these people that are brought from all over the country".
