CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston Athletics and the Charleston Athletic Fund announce the launch of the
Charleston STARR (Student-Athlete Recruitment and Retention) Fund, an initiative that embraces the evolving college athletics landscape and enables Charleston to capitalize on the opportunities made possible with the recent House vs. NCAA Settlement.
As part of the Charleston Athletic Fund's portfolio of philanthropy, the
STARR Fund will serve as the primary conduit for financial support needed to increase scholarships and share revenue while recruiting and retaining talented student-athletes.
"The College of Charleston remains aggressive with its approach to the ever-changing landscape of college athletics since the inception of NIL over four years ago," said Director of Athletics
Matt Roberts. "We have taken a leadership role in how we embrace NIL and the opportunities it provides NCAA student-athletes. The creation of the
Charleston STARR Fund solidifies our position as a leader among NCAA Division 1 institutions as we embark on this exciting and unprecedented era of intercollegiate competition."
Following the landmark House Settlement, institutions can now provide full scholarships up to roster limits as well as make direct financial revenue share payments to student-athletes. Prior to the House Settlement, NIL opportunities for College of Charleston Athletics were facilitated by The Charleston Edge Collective, a third-party operator. The Charleston Edge Collective will continue as a third-party marketing agency to support Charleston Athletics while assisting with community engagement efforts in support of the
STARR Fund.
"The way we, as a university, think about college athletics has certainly changed," said College of Charleston President Andrew Hsu, "and I am proud of our institution for how it has responded to those many changes. One thing that has not changed, however, is our commitment to our student-athletes. We are committed to providing our student-athletes the best experience possible, so that they may be successful on and off the competitive playing fields and both inside and outside of the classroom."
