Former College of Charleston all-conference men’s golf standout Alex Ellis (’15) is in his third season as an assistant coach at his alma mater.
Ellis competed for the Cougars from 2010-14 and led the program to their first-ever championship title as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association during the 2013-14 campaign. In 43 career tournaments played, he finished in the Top 10 seven times. Ellis still holds the distinction of being the only golfer in program history to qualify and play in three U.S. Amateur Championships.
In 2013, Ellis became only the third men’s golfer in school history to qualify for NCAA Regionals as an individual next to CofC Athletics Hall of Famer Jedd McLuen (2000), Bruce McDonald (2003) and Josh Lorenzetti (2013). He still ranks sixth all-time in single-season birdies made (111), fifth in career birdies made (334), 12th in career finish percentage (60.1%) and 15th in career scoring average (74.70).
A native of Austin, Texas, Ellis earned his bachelor’s degree in hospitality and tourism management from The College in 2015 after pursuing a professional playing career. He currently resides on the Charleston Peninsula and served as interim head coach of the men's golf program in the summer of 2018.
Ellis previously starred at Austin’s Westlake High School and finished runner-up in a playoff for the Class 5A state championship title behind future PGA TOUR professional Jordan Spieth.
