The College of Charleston women’s soccer team reintegrated a familiar face into the program in August 2016, adding former CofC soccer player Jamie Martina as the team’s new assistant coach.
Though her CofC playing career came to an end in 2004, Martina has been a Lowcountry fixture for over a decade. She returns to the College after spending the last decade with The Citadel, where she was an assistant coach and coordinated the Bulldogs’ recruiting efforts while also acted as the team’s director of operations.
“I am so excited to have Jamie join my staff here at CofC and I know that she will be a great addition to our program,” head coach Christian Michner said. “She has tremendous coaching experience having spent so many years coaching at The Citadel and she’ll impact our program in all aspects.”
A 2004 graduate of College of Charleston, Martina (formerly Jamie Stewart) earned a bachelor’s degree in corporate communications and was a four-year member of the soccer team. During her first stint as a Cougar, she earned second-team All-SoCon honors twice and was tabbed to the SoCon All-Tournament team three times.
She served as team captain from 2001-04 and was named an NSCAA Academic All-American in 2003. Martina was also a top-three finalist for the J. Stewart Walker Cup which is awarded to an athlete excelling in academics, athletics and leadership at College of Charleston.
Martina was a four-year varsity player at Mauldin High School in Greenville, S.C., and was selected the Class 4A South Carolina Player of the Year in 2000. She was part of the Olympic Development Team for seven years and was also a member of UGSA United, a five-time state championship squad.
“Jamie is a proud alum and I know that there is a special feeling coming home to coach at your alma mater,” Michner said. “I can’t wait for her to get started with us.”
She has been involved with The Citadel Soccer Training Center since 2005, spent five years on the Ralph Lundy Soccer Association Soccer Camp staff and coached three years for the Kevin Dempsey Soccer Camp and the Mt. Pleasant Soccer Club. She also led the MPSC Conquest to two South Carolina state championships.
Martina earned her master’s degree in secondary counseling from The Citadel Graduate College in May 2009. On Mar. 22, 2013, she married Sage Martina, who played for the men's soccer team at College of Charleston.
