With the win UNCG improves to 8-14 on the season and 8-7 in Southern Conference action. The College of Charleston slips to 5-18 overall and 3-13 in league play. The win also improves the Spartans to 7-1 against Southern Conference opponents this season in Fleming Gym and improved UNCG's winning streak against the Cougars to 13 games.
The College of Charleston scored the first eight points of the game and managed to keep UNCG off the scoreboard until the 16:36 mark when Megan Honeycutt hit a driving layup in traffic. The Cougars stretched their lead to as many as 10, 14-4, before the Spartans began to rally and cut into the lead. The Spartans then scored seven straight, cutting the lead to 14-11. The Cougars maintained their lead and took a 33-28 advantage into the intermission.
Jacinda Lambert hit a pair of free throws and buried a 3-pointer to open the second half for the Spartans, tying the score at 33-33. A steal and a layup by Erica Nesmith put the Cougars back up 35-33 before an Amanda Eaton 3-pointer from the right wing gave the Spartans' their first lead of the game, 36-35. The Spartans quickly extended their lead to eight, 48-40, on an another Eaton 3-pointer. Back-to-back buckets by Irene Otamari extended the Spartans' lead to 14, 56-42, at the 8:21 left.
Eaton's 14 made free throws was the second highest total in Spartan history. She also pulled down a game-high seven rebounds. Jacinda Lambert was the only other Spartan to reach double-figures as she scored 14 points and pulled down six rebounds.
UNCG will return to action again on Valentine's Day, February 14, at Western Carolina. Tip-off is slated for 4 pm at the Ramsey Atletic Center. The College of Charleston will return home to host Furman on Saturday, February 14 at 1 pm.
