Both teams went back and forth in the first half and the game was even tied 11-11 with 12:56 left in the half before a 10-0 run by the Paladins took the game to 21-11 with 8:11 left before intermission. Furman finished the half with a 28-9 run that saw the score reach 39-20. The Cougars only shot 25 percent from the field with the Paladins nailing a 45.5 percentage. Charleston was two-for-18 from the three-point line in the first half.
Furman continued its dominance in the second half and led by 27 with 13:43 left in the game before the Cougars, led by Rachel King's 14 points in the second half, including four three-pointers, went on a 30-8 run over the next 12 minutes to cut the margin to five, 62-57. However, clutch free-throw shooting by the Paladins doomed the Cougar rally over the final 1:43 of the game.
King led the Cougars with 17 points, while Deshara Shealey's 23 points and 13 rebounds paced the Paladins. Furman shot 41 percent from the field for the game, while the Cougars ended with 35.3, after a 44.4 percent effort in the second half. The Paladins held the slight edge in rebounding, 45-42. The Cougars shot only 22.9 percent (seven-for-31) from the three-point arc, while the Paladins shot 22.2.
The College of Charleston hosts Wofford Feb. 16th at 7:00 PM for its final home game of the season, while Furman travels down the road to Georgia Southern for a Monday tip-off at 7:00 PM.
