Gini Grimsley scored 24 points, including 18 in the second half, to lead the UNC Greensboro Spartans to the 70-55 win over the College of Charleston women's basketball team in action this afternoon in front of 568 fans at Fleming Gym in Greensboro, N.C.
Charleston drops to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in the Southern Conference. UNC Greensboro improves to 3-5 and 2-0 in league play.
Despite a poor shooting effort in the first half, Charleston stayed in the game off a 10-for-11 effort from the free throw line. The Cougars shot just 16.1 percent from the field and did not score a basket from 15:06 until a Jade Hughes (Spartanburg, S.C.) jumper at the 8:52 mark ended the drought. UNC Greensboro led by six, 23-17, with 1:21 to go before intermission before the Cougars scored four unanswered points to go into the locker room only trailing by two, 23-21.
UNC Greensboro took a two-point halftime lead and turned it into a blow-out, opening the second-half with a 25-8 run to take the 45-29 lead with 10:15 remaining. The Cougars cut the margin to 11 with 11:00 remaining but that would be as close as they would get as UNCG outscored CofC 25-11 down the stretch to take the 15-point, 70-55 win.
Grimsely's 24 points was a career-high and led the Spartans. TaShama Banner followed with 10 points. Grimsley also led in rebounds with seven.
Brooke Kotcella (Anderson, S.C.) led the Cougars with 11 points, while Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fla.) and Hughes added 10 each. Sarah Moye led the team with 11 rebounds and is now just one away from becoming the seventh player in CofC Division I history to reach 500 rebounds.
Charleston shot 52.2 percent in the second half to finish the game with a 31.5 percentage from the field. The Spartans finished the game with a 49.2 field goal percentage, after shooting 61.3 in the second half.
The Cougars had 21 turnovers, compared to 15 for the Spartans. 31 of the Spartans' 70 points came off CofC turnovers, compared to just 12 for Charleston.
Charleston out-rebounded UNCG 38-33.
The Cougars continue up the road Monday, Dec. 8 for a 7:00 p.m. game at Elon. The Spartans host Fordham Saturday, Dec. 13 at 1:00 p.m.
