College of Charleston center Deidra Jones scored 15 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead a balanced Cougar scoring attack that produced four double-figure scorers and led the No. 4 seed Cougars to a 65-54 quarterfinal round win over No. 5 seed Davidson.
The Cougars (22-7) move on to face No. 1 seed Chattanooga in the noon semifinal on Sunday. The pairing sets up a rematch of one of last year's semifinal matchups in which the Lady Mocs knocked off the Cougars, 68-53. The Wildcats end their season at 12-18.
Charleston's Brooke Kotcella also tallied 15 points, while guard Tonia Gerty and Jade Hughes chipped in with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Leading the way for the Wildcats was guard Alex Thompson who scored a game-high 21 points and snatched seven boards. All-Conference performer Mercedes Robinson recorded 19 points and seven rebounds in her final college game.
After trailing 33-26 at halftime, the Wildcats looked to make a run in the second half. After pulling within two at multiple points in the second half, Davidson had a chance to tie the score at 51 at the 7:19 mark. However a missed layup and back-to-back Brooke Kotcella 3-pointers broke the game open again and put the Cougars up by eight with 6:34 remaining in the game. From that point on Davidson could pull no closer than five as CofC closed out the game on a 14-5 run.
College of Charleston held the Wildcats to only 30 percent (18-of-60) from the field, including 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from the 3-point line and outrebounded the Cougars by 15.
The first 18 minutes was a back and forth affair with neither team taking more than a four point lead. However, the final two minutes saw the Cougars go on a mini 7-1 run to take a seven point lead into halftime.
