
CofC Track & Field Team Finishes Seventh at SoCon Championships

STATESBORO, GA. ? The College of Charleston women's track and field team finished seventh in the 2009 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships contested on the campus of Georgia Southern University on Saturday and Sunday.
Top performers on the weekend included Emily Smith, who finished first in the high jump with a 1.75-meter effort. The jump was good enough to qualify Smith for the upcoming NCAA Regionals.
Other top finishers on the weekend included Kristen Wolfe, who placed third in the 3000 meter steeple chase with a time of 11:12.18 and fourth in the 1500 meters in a school-record time of 4:42.11.
Erin Stoddard was a fifth place finisher in the 10,000 meters in 38:44.98, while Isabel Boersma also placed fifth in the Heptathlon, setting a school record in the process. Mary Zolga also set a school-mark in the 400-meters with a time of 56.58 to qualify for the finals, in which she finished eighth in 56.70.
Ariel Hatcher rounded out the top Charleston finishers on the weekend placing seventh in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.05 after qualifying for the finals with a school-record time of 25.00, while the 4x400 meter relay team set a school record with a time of 3:51.59.
Also, the SoCon named several Cougar competitors to the All-Freshman team in various events. They included Hatcher in the 200-meters, Wolfe in the 1,500 and 3,000-meters, Callen Powers in the 1,500-meters, Smith in the high jump and Keshia Thacker in the shot put.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, May 9th when they take part at the Orange and Purple Classic in Clemson, S.C.
