The invitation-only national indoor championship includes 60 Division I teams playing at 15 regional sites. Charleston joins Boston University, Miami and Mississippi State at the Miami Regional. The Cougars are one of three teams at that site to have competed in the 2009 NCAA Tennis Championships. Charleston is also the first team from the Southern Conference to be invited to the tournament which is now entering its third year.
"We are ecstatic to be competing at a national level against this type of competition," head coach Angelo Anastopoulo said.
CofC will open the tournament with Mississippi State on Saturday at 10 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The Bulldogs were 10-10 in 2009, while going 1-10 in SEC competition. Mississippi State is coached by Daryl Greenan and assisted by Max Fomine.
Miami and Boston University will meet at 2 p.m., following Charleston's match. Miami advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships last year, before falling to eventual National Champion Duke. The Hurricanes are ranked seventh in the latest ITA poll, released Jan. 26.
Boston University is 62nd on the ITA national rankings. They won the America East tournament in 2009 to advance to the NCAAs. The Terriers were swept by UCLA in the tournament, who later fell to Miami in the Round of 16.
College of Charleston will play either Boston or Miami in either the championship or consolation match on Sunday, depending on the outcome of Saturday's matches. The winner of the Miami region will be invited to compete in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Feb. 12-15. The national championships will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin, who receives an automatic bye to the tournament.
