Ellis and Martin Named CofC Scholar Athletes-of-the-Month
10/14/2010 6:23:00 PM | Men's Golf, Women's Golf
Freshman men's golfer Alex Ellis (Austin, Texas) and sophomore women's golfer Anna Martin (Easley, S.C.) have been named College of Charleston Scholar-Athletes for the month of September.
Ellis was chosen in part because of the proactive approach he has taken with his academic studies. It can be extremely difficult for freshmen to adjust to the rigors of college academics and the freedoms of college life. Ellis has transitioned well in both of these areas in addition to training and competing with the golf team.
Ellis has played in all three tournaments for the Cougars and is second on the team in stroke average with a 74.0. In Charleston's last tournament, Ellis finished tied for 16th, his highest finish so far this season.
Ellis has become a valuable member of the golf team which has meant that he has had to make this transition even more quickly than the typical freshman student-athlete. He has taken this challenge in stride by putting forth a constant and conscious effort to communicate with his professors and make time for his studies. Ellis has the self-motivation to be successful in college and deserves this award because his successful transition should be an example for all first-year College of Charleston students.
Martin has shown tremendous growth in her academics since she began her studies at the College last fall. She has worked hard to improve her time-management and study skills while connecting with the resources available to students here on campus.
Fourth on the team in stroke average with a 78.3, Martin has competed for the Cougars in all three tournaments this season. Martin most recently tied for 53rd at the Nittany Lion Women's Invitational.
The time and effort Martin has directed towards her studies has paid off as she has seen the results in her academic performance. Martin now serves as a model of the way a student-athlete should approach his or her studies.
The CofC Scholar-Athlete of the Month Award is a recognition program which honors one male and one female student-athlete that has shown a commitment to academic achievement. Each scholar-athlete is nominated by the Student-Athlete Academic Services office headed up by director Keith Merritt II and assisted by Kate Tiller and Karen Donovan.
