
Havel Sets School Block Record, Cougars Blast Elon

ELON, N.C. - Junior Sarah Havel smashed the Cougar block record with 17 rejections as the College of Charleston volleyball team blew past the Elon Phoenix on Saturday night (29-27, 25-13, 20-25, 25-9).
The Cougars won their 13th match in their last 14 and their sixth straight conference victory. With the victory the team also clinched a spot in the 2010 Southern Conference Tournament to be played Nov. 19-21 at Appalachian State University.
Havel led a strong defensive effort as the Cougars (20-5, 9-1) set a school record with 23 team blocks. CofC forced Elon (14-12, 6-4) into 38 attack errors for the match. Senior Ginny Phillips totaled nine blocks and fellow senior Paige Johnson registered 18 digs.
On offense junior Elyse Chubb was active the entire night, slamming 20 kills on 34 attempts (.559 hitting percentage). Senior Cole Dawley set up the offensive attack with 42 assists for the match.
With the victory the Cougars have recorded 20 wins for the ninth time in the last 10 years. The squad will resume action on Tuesday night at Charleston Southern.
