
Cougars Advance to Championship Match

BOONE, N.C. - The College of Charleston volleyball team is heading back to the SoCon Tounament Championship match as they picked up a 3-1 victory over the UNCG Spartans in the semi-finals Saturday at the Holmes Convocation Center (25-17, 25-19, 22-25, 25-19).
The Cougars (29-5) will play Georgia Southern in tomorrow's Championship match a 2p.m. They will look to win their seventh Southern Conference Volleyball Championship in the last nine years.
Junior Sarah Havel had 11 kills and hit .786 and senior Ginny Phillips registered 16 kills to lead the Cougars. Senior Cole Dawley, recently named Southern Conference Player of the Year collected her 16th double-double of the season with 47 assists and 12 digs.
CofC Head Coach Jason Kepner earned his 100th career victory along with each of the four Cougar seniors (Dawley, Phillips, Paige Johnson and Whitney Russell) as they came in when Kepner took over the program.
Kepner, in his fourth year with the Cougars has now posted a 100-33 overall record.
The Cougars hit .299 as a team and totaled nine blocks, holding the Spartans (22-12) to a .175 hitting efficiency. CofC also created extra opportunities as they dug 67 balls, compared to 48 for UNCG.
The winner of tomorrow's championship match will earn the Southern Conference automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
