The Demon Deacons (5-6, 0-1 ACC) have been consistently ranked since the first poll came out by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Jan. 5. They are 2-1 against Southern Conference opponents after picking up 7-0 wins over Elon and Wofford and dropping a 5-2 decision to Furman. Both squads have also earned 7-0 victories over Charlotte and suffered setbacks to No. 20 South Carolina.
College of Charleston (7-4, 3-0 SoCon) is on a four-match win streak, having won 18 straight sets this past weekend on its home court to sweep Western Carolina and Charlotte, 7-0. CofC earned a No. 67 ranking in the latest ITA poll, released on Tuesday. The Cougars are 1-4 against nationally-ranked teams. CofC defeated No. 62 Boston University 5-2 in the consolation match of the ITA Indoor Regionals on Jan. 31.
Sophomore Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C./Page) leads the Cougars eight singles victories, with the majority at the No. 3 spot. The Southern Conference Player of the Week for Mar. 2 is riding a four-match streak, tying with junior Kinsey Casey (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview). Casey has rotated between the second and fourth spots while also winning three consecutive doubles matches last week with three different partners.
The Cougars will warm up for Wake Forest with a morning match against Case Western Reserve. The Spartans are 8-3 on the year, competing at the Division III level.
