
Cougars Host Phoenix in Battle to Stay Atop the SoCon

The Cougars and the Phoenix are in a three-way tie with Furman for first place in the conference. Charleston (13-8, 6-0 SoCon) is on its fifth 6-0 start in the Southern Conference in the last seven years. Head coach Angelo Anastopaulo's squad downed Davidson 5-2 on Mar. 20 before sweeping Appalachian State 7-0 the following day.
Senior Holly Dowse (Tuncurry, Australia/Forster) was named the CofC Student-Athlete of the Week after compiling a perfect 4-0 record in doubles and a 3-2 mark in singles competition last week. She and junior Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand/New Mexico) defeated the 19th-ranked doubles team in the country, 8-5 in their match against Princeton. The pair also beat the top team from nationally-ranked NC State are now listed 76th on the ITA Poll.
Dowse is also 5-0 in conference singles competition as the No.1 spot for the Cougars. Junior Keely Mulligan (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and sophomore Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C./Page) are also undefeated in singles action against conference opponents. Mulligan is 4-0 from the No. 6 spot while Newman has alternated between the No. 2 and 3 spots to compile a perfect 6-0 record.
The Phoenix (13-3, 4-0 SoCon) earned a 5-2 victory over Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga. on Mar. 23 to remain perfect in the conference. Senior Anna Milian leads the league with a 12-2 record as Elon's No. 1 seed. Sophomore Lauren Sessoms is also playing well for head coach for Elizabeth Anderson with a 10-4 record, playing primarily at the No. 5 spot.
