
Cougars fall to Appalachian State 77-58 in WBI East Region Final

BOONE, N.C. – Senior guard Ericka Williams (Blackville, S.C.) led three Cougars with eight points as the College of Charleston (21-12, 13-7) fell to Appalachian State (22-12, 14-6) 77-58 in the East Region Final of the Women's Basketball Invitational at the George M. Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, N.C.
Trailing 9-8 with 14:33 to play in the first half, Appalachian State took control of the game as they held CofC scoreless for 7:32 as they mounted a 16-0 run to take a 24-9 lead. A pair of Cougars three-pointers then sparked a brief 6-2 run to close to 26-15 at the 6:00 minute mark. That would be as close as they would get for the remainder of the half though as the Mountaineers used a 14-3 run to head into the break with a commanding 40-18 lead.
The College of Charleston trailed 53-25 shortly into the second half before a 7-0 run, fueled by a jumper and a three from senior guard Jade Hughes (Spartanburg S.C.), made it 55-32 with 13:10 to play. A 12-4 stretch then narrowed the margin to 15 points at 59-44 with 7:54 to play before the Mountaineers pushed the lead to 65-46 behind a 6-2 run. From there, ASU would close out the 77-58 victory to advance to the WBI Championship Game against either Memphis or Texas A&M Corpus-Christi.
Freshman forward Ashlen Dewart led the Mountaineer attack with 25 points and six rebounds while freshman forward Anna Freeman finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Catherine Williams added eight points and nine rebounds.
Ericka Williams eight points tied for the team high for the College of Charleston while Jade Hughes also notched eight points and dished out four assists and Tonia Gerty added eight points and five rebounds. Senior center Deidra Jones (Irmo, S.C.) finished with seven points and three rebounds and Fischer chipped in with seven points on 3-for-4 shooting.
The College of Charleston closes out a record-setting 2009-10 campaign with a 21-12 overall record.
