Sophomore Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C./Pope) was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for her performance. Newman won all four matches, earning wins with two different doubles partners at the No. 3 spot. The Cougars host the Catamounts (1-1) of Western Carolina at 10 a.m. WCU has played just two games this season due to bad weather postponing seven matches for the Catamounts. The team earned home victories over Brevard, 6-1, and Mercer, 4-3 in February. The squad is led by sophomore Ainhoa Iglesias who is 1-1 with Amanda Massey as the top seed in doubles. She also posts a 2-0 record in singles action from the No. 3 spot. Western Carolina is scheduled to play Georgia Southern in its conference opener on Saturday in Statesboro, Ga. before making the trek to Charleston.
CofC plays its second match of the day against Charlotte of the Atlantic 10 Conference at 3 p.m. The 49ers are 2-6 this year with their sole win on the road against Wofford on Feb. 18. Charlotte earned a 5-2 victory over the Terriers, who have also faced Samford and Elon of the Southern Conference.
