CHARLESTON, S.C. - No. 65 College of Charleston women's tennis hosts Georgia Southern in its final regular-season match on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at Patriots Point.
Head coach Angelo Anastopoulo's squad is undefeated in SoCon competition and a win over the Eagles would give the Cougars (17-9, 9-0 SoCon) sole custody of the conference regular season title. If Georgia Southern should win, Charleston would share the regular-season title with Samford.
CofC is on a three-match win streak, having most recently defeated then-67th ranked Charleston Southern 6-1 at Patriots Point on Apr. 12. Charleston's top duo of senior Holly Dowse (Tuncurry, Australia/Forster) and junior Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand/New Mexico) are ranked 37th in the nation, according to the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. The pair defeated Bucs' top pair of Andrea Schutte and Angie Torres to win their eighth consecutive match and improve to 15-5 as the No. 1 seed.
Sophomore Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C./Page) continues to hold the best singles record on the team with a 19-6 mark on the season, including a 13-2 record as the No. 3 seed. She is one of three players who have won eight of her last 10 singles matches.
Georgia Southern (11-8, 5-4 SoCon) is currently tied with Elon for fifth place in the Southern Conference and will be battling for a chance to compete in the conference tournament, hosted by the Cougars on Apr. 24-25. The Eagles most recently edged Chattanooga 4-3 as senior Jessica Fuller clinched the win from the sixth seed.
Thursday's match will also be the final home regular-season match for the team's four seniors; Laura Borza (Toronto, Ontario/Mary Ward Secondary), Nina Burgoon (Gastonia, N.C./Long Beach State), Holly Dowse (Tuncurry, Australia/Forster) and Anna Lee Evans (Vilas, N.C./Watauga).
