Dowse and Hayman are the first women from the Southern Conference to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships, which take place after the conclusion of the team championships on May 26 in Athens, Ga. Additionally, the Cougars are the first athletes, male or female, from Charleston's triad of Division I programs to compete in the individual tournament.
Dowse and Hayman will face the Blue Demons in the afternoon session on Thursday. The duo are 17-6 on the year as Charleston's top doubles team and are currently ranked 37th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Dowse and Hayman were named first-team all-conference after going a perfect 6-0 in the SoCon.
They have competed against four nationally-ranked doubles teams, defeating then-No.19 Hilary Bartlett and Taylor Marable of Princeton on Mar. 16. Most recently, the pair fell to the seventh-ranked duo of Ina Hadziselimovic and Josipa Bek of Clemson in the first round of the NCAA Team Championships on May 14.
Salkovic and Redecsi are also making school history as the first tandem to earn a bid to the 32-team doubles championship. Both received All-Big East honors as they compiled a 29-7 record, including 18-4 as the No. 1 seed. The duo is currently ranked 18th in the nation by ITA and had a large part in helping the Blue Demons to their first NCAA Team Championship appearance.
Should the Cougars advance to the Round of 16, they would likely meet the overall No. 1 seed, Natalie Pluskota and Caitlin Whoriskey of Tennessee. The Volunteers play Joyce Ardies and Denise Dy of Washington on Thursday.
The championships take place at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Georgia's campus. Fans unable to attend the match can follow the action through live scoring and video webstream on the tournament page of the NCAA website.
