
Smith Ties School Record in 76-67 Loss

Janae Smith (Matteson, Ill.) tied the College of Charleston's Division I record for most points in a game with 33 in a 76-67 losing effort to Wofford in women's basketball action in front of 176 fans at the Ben Johnson Arena in Spartanburg, S.C.
Smith's 33 points was the first time since the 1997-98 season that a Cougar has scored over 30 points. The last was a 31-point performance by Missy Peterson Feb. 16, 1998. Peterson also shares the Division I record with a 33-point performance against Campbell Feb. 12, 1998.
The Cougars (4-12, 1-6) missed their first five shots of the game before Ariel Hatcher (Detroit, Mich.) ended the drought with a basket at 15:25, to trail by six, 8-2. Charleston posted just two more baskets over the next five minutes and found itself down 22-6 with 10:40 remaining in the half.
Beginning with two free throws by Brianna Davie (Goose Creek, S.C.) at 10:16, the Cougars used a 22-10 run to cut the margin to four, 32-28, with 1:59 on the clock. Leading the charge was Smith (Matteson, Ill.) who scored nine, including five free throws. Wofford (6-8, 2-4) scored five unanswered points to end the half with the37-28 lead.
Charleston and Wofford traded baskets as the Terriers maintained their lead through the first 10-and-a-half minutes of the second half and were up 52-43 with11:27 remaining. Smith nailed a three-pointer to cut the deficit to six with 11:11 to go and jumpstarted a 7-2 run that saw the Cougars get to within four, 54-50, with 8:12 on the clock. Wofford's Maddie Helms put the margin back up to seven, 57-50, with a three-pointer at 7:59.
The Cougars cut the lead to five with 6:54 remaining but that would be as close as they would get as the Terriers used clutch shooting down the stretch to secure the 76-67 win
Following Smith in scoring was Megan Fischer (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and Hatcher with nine each. Smith's nine rebounds also paced the team. Wofford was led by April Moorhouse with 23 points and six rebounds.
After shooting 25.8 percent in the first half the Cougars improved to 38.9 in the second to end the game with 32.8 percent from the field. Wofford shot 46.6 percent. Charleston connected on 18-of-22 free throws, including a nine-for-12 effort from Smith. Wofford was 16-of-21. Rebounds were fairly even with the Terriers edging the Cougars 42-39. Turnovers were also even with Wofford holding the 24-23 advantage.
