Three Spartans scored in double figures, including Dayshaun Richbow, who hit two free throws with eight seconds remaining, to seal a 50-45 win over the College of Charleston women's basketball team in action tonight in front of 382 fans at the Carolina First Arena.
The second half was a battle with five ties, the last at the 4:58 mark, 41-41. Prior to that, neither the Cougars (4-13, 1-7) nor the Spartans (9-7, 6-2) took more than a three-point lead. UNC Greensboro scored five straight to lead 46-41 with 1:44 on the clock, but the Cougars clawed back with four straight by Janae Smith (Matteson, Ill.) to cut the margin to one, 46-45, with just under a minute remaining.
UNC Greensboro responded to the Cougar run with a basket by Kendra Smith at the 24 second mark and two clutch free throws by Richbow, part of her 11-points on the night, to hold off the Cougars and take the five-point, 50-45 win.
Charleston struggled from the field early in the game, ending the first half just 27.3 percent from the field. Down 11-16 with 8:59 to go in the half, the Cougars used a 10-0 run, in part to a six-point effort from Deidre Ramer (Franklin, Tenn.) to take a five point lead, 21-16, with 3:45 to go. A basket by Monique Floyd at 2:19 ended the UNCG drought.
The Spartans retook the lead 22-21 off a jumper by Smith with 44 seconds to go, before Ramer hit two free throws with 14 on the clock to give the Cougars the halftime lead, 23-22.
Leading the Cougars was Smith with 13 points and Ramer with career-high 11. Jillian Brown (Midlothian, Va.) pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds to lead the team as well. Floyd paced UNC Greensboro with 18. Smith had 10 points and led in rebounds with six, along with Janae' Stevenson.
Charleston shot 29.5 percent from the field, which included a 0-for-13 effort from beyond the three-point arc. UNC Greensboro shot 31.7 percent from the field, and connected on just two-of-19 shots from the perimeter.
The Cougars out-rebounded the Spartans, 52-41, and had seven more turnovers, 19-12.
