
Cougars Take on Phoenix

Head Coach Nancy Wilson will look for her 300th win as coach of the Cougars travel to Elon, N.C. to take on the Elon Phoenix in women's basketball action Saturday, Jan. 22. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
With a 299-186 record in her 16th season, Coach Wilson is looking for her 300th win as coach of the Cougars. She is 530-335 overall in 29 years of coaching.
Charleston (5-13, 2-7) owns a 13-4 record over Elon (12-5, 7-2) and has won the last six in a row. The last meeting was a 64-57 decision Jan. 25, 2010. Brooke Kotcella (Anderson, S.C.) led the Cougars with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fla.) followed with 13. The Phoenix last won Feb. 10, 2007 as it came away with the 64-58 victory.
The Cougars held the Eagles to just 24.6 percent shooting, including 15.6 in the first half and came away with the 40-39 win, snapping an eight-game losing streak, in their last game. Leading the Cougars in scoring for the fifth straight game was Janae Smith (Matteson, Ill.) with 12 points. Megan Fischer (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds.
Two Cougars are averaging in double-figures this season with Smith leading the pack at 11.9 a game. Gerty is second with 10.2. Smith also holds the top spot in rebounds with 6.0.
Elon has won six in a row, the last a 63-61 victory at UNC Greensboro Jan. 19. Ali Ford leads the Phoenix in points with 16.0. Kelsey Evans follows with 11.5 points and a team-leading 8.7 rebounds per game.
Charleston is 2-8 on the road so far this year. The Cougars have been out-scored 54.8-68.0 and have been out-rebounded 40.5-46.4. On a positive side, the Cougars take more shots, 593-583.
In the five games won by the Cougars this season, they have shot better (.364-.322). Rebounds are fairly even with Charleston holding a slight 38.4-37.2 advantage. Charleston has just a few more turnovers, 108-105, and a few more steals, 57-47. The games have been tight, with the point differential only 3.6.
