
Cougars Fall to Bulldogs

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman Janae Smith (Matteson, Ill.) recorded her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds, but the Cougars fell 78-48 against the Samford Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at the Pete Hanna Center.
For Smith it was her eighth consecutive game scoring in double figures. On the defensive end sophomore Cathryn Hardy (Dayton, Ohio) had a career-high with nine rebounds as CofC came away with a 37-34 edge on the boards.
The Cougars (6-15, 3-9) kept the game close in the early going with tough defense and held the Bulldogs (15-6, 8-4) without a point until the 16:48 mark of the first half. Then the Bulldogs caught fire and used an 11-0 run to open up the game. Samford held a 35-20 lead at halftime.
In the second-half CofC Head Coach Nancy Wilson went deep into her bench as 11 athletes played for the Cougars and as a team CofC registered 20 points off the bench.
Freshman Alyssa Frye (Chester, Va.) played for the first time since Jan. 3 and was two-for-two from beyond the 3-point arc with six points for the game.
Senior Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fla.) dished out a game-high five assists as she extended her CofC career record in assists to 426.
Sophomore Megan Fischer (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) was the Cougars second leading scorer with eight points. Fischer's father made the long trek from Illinois to supprt his daughter as many other parents and fans came to cheer on the Cougars.
The Cougars resume competition on Monday at 7p.m. against the Chattanooga Mocs.
