
Cougars Come Up Short against Mocs

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fla.) scored 14 points and Megan Fischer (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) added 11 as the Cougars lost the battle against the Chattanooga Mocs 48-65 Monday night at McKenzie Arena.
Gerty scored the first eights point of the game as the Cougars (6-16, 3-10) raced to an 8-0 lead and were up 14-4 as they held the Mocs (10-11, 7-5) without a basket for nearly the first four minutes of the game. Then the Mocs came storming back and tied the game at 14-14 with a 10-0 run of their own.
The Cougars continued their strong play from the bench as Alyssa Frye (Chester, Va.) led the reserves, as she scored nine of the 25 points from the bench compared to 13 bench points from Chattanooga.
Freshman Janae Smith (Matteson, Ill.) played another strong game for the Cougars with seven points and nine rebounds.
The Cougars led 24-22 at halftime, but Chattanooga forward Whitney Hood took control of the game in the second half as she finished with 17 points.
Down by 11 midway through the second half the Cougars went on a 5-0 run to close the gap to six at 34-40, but the Mocs responded with a 13-6 run to put the game away.
The Cougars resume action next week as they host Appalachian State on Saturday Feb. 5. as part of a double-header with the men's basketball team.
