MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Breezy winds and sunny skies were welcome after tough conditions on Saturday  as the CofC women's tennis team won six out of ten flights on their home courts Sunday afternoon on the last day of the Frightful Halloween Challenge.
Overcoming recent illnesses and injuries, freshmen Jenny Falcone and Samantha Maddox won the number four and five singles flights respectively. Sophomore Kelly Kambourelis tied for the title in the number three singles flight, and sophomore Jamie Harrell was the winner of the number seven flight.
In doubles, the newly formed team of Harrell and Irene Viana won the number one doubles flight (3-0 overall). Harrell and Viana topped Kentucky's Morin and Blajkevitch  (8-6) for the championship. Maddox and junior Christin Newman claimed the third doubles flight (3-0 overall).  Also in doubles play, Falcone and Kelly Kambourelis finished second overall by defeating Venter and McGraw of Kentucky (8-4) in the second flight.
"I can see a vast improvement in our team over the last six weeks when we last played in the CofC Invitational in mid-September," CofC Director of Tennis and Head Coach Angelo Anastopoulo said. "We look forward to the spring season and our opening two matches against Top 10 teams, Clemson and Duke."
Fall play for the Cougars concluded with this weekend's tournament. They will open the spring season against Clemson on Jan. 22, 2012.
