MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's track and field team had a successful weekend, highlighted by four new school records at the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina.
After establishing the second best mark in school history in the javelin at the Cougars first outdoor meet, freshman Christine Klinar came back and shattered the record by nearly 12 feet as she threw 123 feet, four inches and finished in eighth-place. Klinar broke the previous record of 111 feet, 11 inches by Allison Little in 2003.
Freshman Dena O'Brien had a strong start in her first outdoor meet. O'Brien set the first of her two school record on the day in the 1500-meter run, as she crossed the finish line first in 4:36.37. O'Brien came back to win the 3,000-meter run in a school-record setting time of 9:38.27, besting the previous 3k school mark by 43 seconds. O'Brien finished 11 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
In the 800-meter run junior Alyssa D'Orazio broke her own school record by a second as she ran 2:15.30. D'Orazio, who recently was awarded a $5,000 scholarship through the Family Circle Cup event, finished in fifth-place in the race.
In a very large field of 23 athletes, senior Isabel Boersma continued her productive season as she finished fourth with 4,423 points from the seven events. Boersma, who was second in the pentathlon at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships, finished just 43 points off her school record in the heptathlon.
