Cougars Continue to Re-Write Record Books

DURHAM, N.C. - The College of Charleston Women's Track & Field team continued their success as they broke four school records this weekend at the Duke Invitational.
Freshman Dena O'Brien broke her own 3,000-meter record as she beat a field that included All-Americans en route to a victory and time of 9:28.25, about 10 seconds faster than she ran at the Shamrock Invitational earlier this season.
O'Brien beat the second-place finisher by eight seconds and also finished ahead of Kendra Schaaf from UNC, who was the 2009 NCAA Cross Country Runner-Up. Schaaf was third in the race in 9:40.63.
Junior Alyssa D'Orazio also broke her own school record which she set earlier this season as she clocked a time of 2:14.60 in the 800-meter run.
Senior Mary Zolga had a breakthrough race in the 400 hurdles as she improved on her school record and took ninth in the event with a time of 1:03.08.
Junior Kristen Wolfe ran a 10 second personal record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, thus setting a CofC school record in 10:52.66. Her time is 28th in the NCAA DI East Region.
Seniors Isabel Boersma and Brynne Johnson both set career bests in the 100-meter hurdles. Boersma crossed the finish line in 14.92 seconds and Johnson wasn't far behind in 15.21.
The Cougars 4X400-meter relay team clocked the fourth fastest time in school history, running 3:57.66 for 10th place in the race. The team consisted of Laura Call, Kristen Wolfe, Alyssa D'Orazio and Mary Zolga.
In the 5,000-meter run freshman McKenna Nokes her a nine-second personal record and and finished 14th in her heat with a time of 18:20.06. Natasha Pavlovich ran set a career best as well in 18:54.02.
The next competition for the Cougars will be the Southern Conference Championships, April 22-23 in Birmingham, Ala.
