SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The No. 71-ranked College of Charleston women's tennis team clinched at least a share of its second consecutive Southern Conference regular-season championship title with a 7-0 shutout of Wofford on Friday night at the Reeves Tennis Center.
The Cougars (17-7, 9-0), who moved back into the Campbell/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings earlier this week, played spoiler to the Terriers (10-14, 2-8) on Senior Day keeping a 10-match winning streak intact. They are one win away from claiming the title outright and turning in back-to-back undefeated seasons against league opponents having won 19 straight since the end of the 2010 campaign.
All 10 players on the CofC roster contributed to the win including sophomore Olivia McMillan (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and freshman Jamie Harrell (Charleston, S.C.), who teamed up for an 8-2 victory over Wofford's Lucy Schermerhorn and Samantha Sullivan, at No. 3 doubles.
The Cougars would go on to win the doubles point via a 3-0 sweep down the lineup and showed the same dominance throughout singles as all but one match went into three sets. Sophomore Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) won the decisive fourth point for CofC defeating Wofford's top player Emilia Milovanovic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
"We played very well today and everyone contributed in our winning effort," said CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo, who has now led the Cougars to their second-straight No. 1 seed in the upcoming 2011 SoCon Tennis Championships on April 20-23 in Chattanooga, Tenn. "Wofford is a young team, but their freshmen played well today. They are going to be a threat over the next couple of years in our league. Overall, Wofford had a very good crowd out for Senior Day, but we responded quite well. We haven't been on the road in a couple of weeks, so it was great to come up big on the road with the No. 1 seed riding on the outcome of this match."
The Cougars will look to close out the regular season on a high note at Western Carolina tomorrow at 10 a.m. (ET) at the Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, N.C.
"We will play in some windy conditions with the possibility of rain," Anastopoulo said. "We will have to be at our very best tomorrow against Western Carolina for a chance to win the conference outright."
