MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The No. 74-ranked College of Charleston women's tennis team rolled past Wofford, 7-0, to pick up its seven consecutive victory of the season in the second half of a doubleheader held on Saturday afternoon at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
It only took the Cougars (11-4, 4-0 SoCon) less than three hours to show why they are the three-time defending Southern Conference champions allowing only 12 games throughout their singles lineup and only seven games in doubles against the visiting Terriers (3-7, 0-1 SoCon).
They had quite a turnaround as their morning match against Charleston Southern lasted close to five hours and overlapped into the afternoon portion of the schedule. It didn't seem to wear the team down as they quickly secured the doubles point by sweeping all three matches.
In singles, freshman Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.) defeated Wofford's Emily Przystawski in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 5 line to extend the CofC lead to 2-0 in the match. Junior Irene Viana (Paris, France) won two love sets against Lucy Schermerhorn at No. 6, while freshman Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.) clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Othilia Lindqvist at No. 4.
"I know they were tired from the first match, but they did a good job of finding the energy necessary to play a great match against a good Wofford team," CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "They came out strong in doubles and continued that momentum right into the singles.
"We will do it all over again tomorrow. It is really great training for us to have a doubleheader like this, because you never know with the SoCon Tournament being here in Charleston (with no indoor facility backup), we may be asked to play a doubleheader. We will have a couple of them under our belt, if that becomes the case."
The Cougars will close out the weekend with a doubleheader scheduled tomorrow against NCAA Division III power University of Chicago (6-2) at 8:30 a.m. (ET) and then league foe Western Carolina (1-9, 0-2 SoCon) at 1 p.m. (ET). Live scoring will be available for both matches at www.CofCSports.com.
"They (University of Chicago) were the No. 1 seed in the ITA Division IIII National lndoor Tournament and will be kind of an ad-lib match for us tomorrow," Anastopoulo said. "Meanwhile, Western Carolina has a great coach that is doing a good job of building their program back up and will be another good challenge for us in our difficult Southern Conference schedule."
