Cougars Battle The Elements Against WCU To Improve To 5-0 In SoCon

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - A two-hour rain and thunderstorm delay didn't hamper the No. 74-ranked College of Charleston women's tennis team's agenda for the day as the Cougars remained an undefeated 5-0 in Southern Conference play with a 4-0 win over Western Carolina on Sunday afternoon at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (13-4, 5-0 SoCon), not only battled the elements, but went the distance playing four matches in the course of two short days and compiling an impressive 4-0 record for the weekend.
The Catamounts (1-10, 0-3 SoCon) couldn't match CofC's depth from top-to-bottom as freshman Grace Baker (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior Olivia McMillan (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) as well as freshman Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.) and sophomore Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.) quickly secured the doubles point allowing zero games in their pro-sets at the No. 3 and No. 2 positions.
Play was suspended at 2:22 p.m. (ET) due to the inclement weather with three of the first six sets of singles completed. The match resumed two hours later on the clay courts at the Live To Play Tennis Center also in Mt. Pleasant.
Like doubles, McMillan and Baker did not relinquish a game to their opponents with a pair of love sets at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Freshman Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.) followed suit clinching the match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over WCU's Katie Barry at No. 4 for the deciding point.
"We had a typical pop-up thunderstorm that happened as a result of the warm temperatures we've had this week which resulted in a rain delay," CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "We are really appreciative of LTP allowing us to finish our match on their courts and the flexibility that (Western Carolina) Coach Chris Wollett showed with us moving the match venue. Our team did a great job of battling the elements today. We are real pleased to be 5-0 at the halfway point of the Southern Conferences season. We are just trying to get better and looking forward to a good Oklahoma match on Tuesday."
Up next, CofC will host No. 44-ranked Oklahoma (7-7) in a non-conference dual match set for Tuesday, March 20 at the CofC Tennis Center and live scoring will be available at www.CofCSports.com. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET).
