CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team is off to a 2-0 start to Southern Conference play with a 7-0 rout of Chattanooga on Friday afternoon at the UTC Tennis Courts. It marked CofC's second shutout in its last four matches.
From the get-go, the Cougars (6-4, 2-0 SoCon) were in control and swept the doubles point for the second time this season as the sister tandem of senior Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) and junior Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) started things off with an 8-3 win over UTC's Emily Hangstefer and Brianna Wishing at No. 3 doubles.
Freshman Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.) and junior Irene Viana (Paris, France) combined for an 8-2 victory over Kaylene Chadwell and Alexa Flynn at the top of the lineup followed by freshman Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.) and sophomore Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.) with an 8-6 tally at No. 2.
For the second-straight match, CofC swept all six singles matches as Christin Newman defeated Jenna Nurik by a count of 6-2 in the first and a love-set in the second at the No. 1 line.
Kambourelis also won in straight sets against Flynn, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2, while senior Katie Lee (Brisbane, Australia) improved to a team-best and undefeated 5-0 on the season with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles which was the deciding point of the match versus the Mocs (8-2, 0-1 SoCon).
"We played well against a much-improved UT Chattanooga team," CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "It was a great ending to a very long road trip. It was a lot of fun, and crazy enough, I'm sad it is done. We are really looking forward to next year's spring break road trip.
"Now, we will have to make the most out of our day off tomorrow and be prepared for a much-improved Appalachian State team followed by a talented Rutgers squad on Sunday."
The Cougars will get ready to host an extensive 11-match homestand at the CofC Tennis Center from March 11-April 1 beginning with a doubleheader on Sunday, March 11 against Appalachian State at 10 a.m. (ET) and then Rutgers at 3 p.m. (ET).
