Newman Clinches 4-3 Match Victory Over Furman
4/12/2012 2:12:00 AM | Women's Tennis
In the last match standing, Newman battled back from a 5-1 deficit in the deciding third set and fought off four match points in the tiebreaker to clinch the win with a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (3) decision over Furman's Katherine Oudin at No. 3 singles.
The Cougars (20-5, 8-1 SoCon) have now assured themselves of at least the No. 2 tournament seed in the upcoming 2012 SoCon Tennis Championships to be held on April 19-22 in Charleston. It marked the program's sixth consecutive 20-win season under CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo.
The Paladins (11-9, 6-2 SoCon) started off the match by winning two of the three doubles matches for the early 1-0 advantage. Sophomore Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.) leveled the playing field with a straight-set victory over Michele Stanford, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2 singles, but Margaret Boyette would put Furman back in front with a 6-4, 6-2 win over freshman Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.) at No. 4.
Junior Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) tied it up at two-all by a count of 6-2, 6-3 over Lauren Kline at the top of the order leaving the No. 3 and No. 6 matches, which had already gone into three sets, to decide the final outcome of the five-hour standoff with the Paladins.
"Caroline really needed that match today for her confidence and to remind herself that she is a winner," Anastopoulo said. "What makes her a champion is her fight and determination on the court. As her career winds down, I'm sure this is one of the matches she will look back on with such a positive memory. I'm very proud of her. The whole team did a really good job with fighting and trying to be at their best today. It was certainly a move in the right direction after the tough weekend we had last weekend (on the road at Elon and UNCG)."
CofC will close out the regular season with back-to-back home matches against Georgia Southern for Senior Day on Friday, April 13 at 2:30 p.m. (ET) and versus East Carolina for USTA Kids Day on Saturday, April 14 at 10 a.m. (ET) at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
