CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's golf team hosted a successful event as 10 of the top 15 teams from the 2012 NCAA Championship competed in the 10th anniversary of the Cougar Classic and the Cougars finished 19th in what will be one of the most competitive tournaments of the collegiate golf season.
The Cougars, led by senior Vanessa Koechli (Greer, S.C.) shot 42-over for the tournament and finished ahead of Miami, Maryland, UNCG, Furman and Charleston Southern.
"We weren't quite as crisp as we should have been and it costs you when you're playing the best teams in the country," CofC head coach Jamie Futrell said. "We still beat some of the teams we needed to beat, but this is not how I planned things going today."
"We can hit the ball with the best teams but we need to be able to clip and putt with them as well, that is where the difference is," Futrell added. "For a freshman that's an eye opener when they get here, they see it and understand it, now they will have to work on it."
Florida won the team title with a six-shot victory over runner-up Duke. The Gators shot the third best score in tournament history an 12-under 852 and their golfer Camilla Hedberg took individual medalist honors with a 13-under 203, which tied the lowest individual round of the tournament in its 10 year history.
Southern Cal (-1), Vanderbilt (E) and Georgia (+3) rounded out the top-five in the team race.
Koechli shot a career best 69 in the second round and followed that up with a 5-over 77 and finished tied for 48th in the tournament with a 6-over 222.
"We did a lot of great things this week," Futrell said. "I wish today we would have been a little better, but we are still a young team and I think we will be fine."
Up next the Cougars travel to State College, Pa., Sept. 28-30 for the Nittany Lion Invitational.
