Women's Golf Set To Host 36-Team Kiawah Island Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. – For the sixth consecutive year, the No. 55-ranked College of Charleston women's golf team will play host to the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country – the Kiawah Island Classic on March 2-4 at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Kiawah Island, S.C.
Thirty-six teams will travel to the Lowcountry for three, 18-hole rounds of golf at Cougar Point and Oak Point courses. Both are par 72s with Cougar Point measuring out to 6,001 yards and Oak Point clocking in at 5,902 yards.
The field features five teams that are currently ranked in the Top 100 by Golfweek including host CofC. The field boasts No. 30-ranked Arkansas State, Bethune-Cookman, Boston College, Boston University, Bucknell, Charleston Southern, No. 70 Chattanooga, The Citadel, Delaware, Elon, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgetown, High Point, No. 89 Jacksonville State, No. 40 Kent State, Loyola, Marshall, Newberry, Niagara, North Florida, Northern Kentucky, UNCG, No. 73 Penn State, Radford, Richmond, Rutgers, No. 91 Samford, St. John's, Tennessee Tech, Towson, Troy, USC Upstate, Western Kentucky, William & Mary and Wyoming.
For the Cougars, sophomore Julia Neumann (Berlin, Germany) returns to defend her title after she shot 3-over par to earn individual medalist honors in 2013. She will be joined by sophomore CAA February Golfer of the Month Mary Chandler Bryan (Chapin, S.C.), sophomore Morgan Webber (Moore, S.C.), freshman Laura Fuenfstueck (Frankfurt, Germany) and senior Kathryn Miranda (Lexington, S.C.).
“We are excited to have the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country,” CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. “We really need to carry the momentum from our tournament in Arizona into this weekend's tournament at Kiawah. We feel good about being home and hosting. We shored up some things from our last round and should be in a good position to play well.”
Redshirt junior C.C. Buford (San Antonio, Texas), sophomore Louise Olsson (Uddeholm, Sweden), sophomore Stacey Tomlinson (Greeleyville, S.C.) and freshman Vici Drechsler (Olching, Germany) will compete as individuals.
Tournament play will begin on Sunday, March 2, as each team will play 18 holes on either Oak Point or Cougar Point with double tee times from 9:45 a.m. to 12:06 p.m. Teams will play the opposite course on Monday, March 3, on an adjusted schedule from 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. (in case of weather).
The Top 19 teams will play for the championship at Cougar Point on Tuesday, March 4, while the other 17 teams will play a flight championship at Oak Point with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
