PINEHURST, N.C. – First-round tournament play at the College of Charleston-hosted 2014 Pinehurst Challenge was suspended due to darkness at the Pinehurst Resort's No. 1 course on Saturday.
The Cougars, one of the first groups to finish before play was called at 7:45 p.m. (ET), went into the clubhouse with a nine-stroke lead over Jacksonville State (+15) shooting a first-round 294 (+6).
Sophomore Morgan Webber (Moore, S.C.) carded the lowest round of the day with a 3-under 69 which tied a career-low round, while freshman Laura Fuenfstueck (Frankfurt, Germany) shot a 2-under 70. Both unofficially are No. 1 and No. 2 on the leaderboard after 18 holes of play.
Bucknell, Siena and eight individuals will finish first-round play tomorrow morning with a shotgun start still scheduled for 8 a.m. (ET). The final two rounds (36 holes) will be played until weather permits.
The 14-team tournament field also includes Appalachian State, Boston University, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Illinois State, Jacksonville, Middle Tennessee State, SCAD-Savannah, USC Upstate and Western Michigan.
This is the first time in the 18-year history of the tournament to be played at the No. 1 course that is situated next to the famous No. 2 that will play host to the 2014 U.S. Open Championships in June.
No live scoring will be available, but final individual and team results will be posted at www.CofCSports.com.
