COLUMBIA, S.C. – The College of Charleston sand volleyball team celebrated a perfect 4-0 start to its season by defeating UAB, 3-2, on Sunday morning. College of Charleston's 4-0 start is the best start in the three years with the program.
The win was big for CofC after UAB defeated the Cougars in both matchups last year. Charleston finished the weekend two wins over power conference schools in LSU and Oregon along with strong mid-majors like ULM and UAB who have had strong showings in the AVCA National Championships.
Charleston's fifth flight finished the weekend with a spotless record as Kallie McKown and Maddie Hills won a two-set decision, 21-11 and 21-19, over the Blazers.
Cara Howley and Melissa Morello went three sets but tallied a crucial victory in the second flight, winning 21-18, 12-21 and 15-6.
Andi Zbojniewicz and Sloane White recorded their third win of the weekend in the third flight, taking down UAB's Amber Treace and Ally Slaughter by scores of 21-15 and 21-16.
Darcy Dorton and Emily Neideffer came close to their first flight win of the season, taking UAB's top team to three sets but falling 15-13 in the third. Catey Warren and Kari Fidelholtz suffered a two-set defeat in the fourth flight, losing by scores of 21-18.
The Cougars will travel to Atlanta for a tournament at Georgia State next weekend, facing GSU, Pepperdine and ULM.
