UNCW Stops Cougar Win Streak At Eight

WILMINGTON, N.C. – After rattling off eight home wins in a row, the College of Charleston women's tennis team fell to CAA foe UNCW 5-2 this afternoon at the UNCW Tennis Complex.
“The marketing department at UNCW did an excellent job promoting this match,” College of Charleston Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “They had some great promotions which drew a big crowd to give them a real home-court advantage. It was a competitive CAA match, five of the six singles matches went to three sets but we couldn't quite pull it off today. We'll have to rebound quickly to be ready to play a very good JMU team tomorrow morning.”
The Seahawks came out of the gates firing as the UNCW doubles duo of Miller Hales and Kelly Cameron knocked off junior Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.) and senior Jamie Harrell (Charleston, S.C.) 8-3 on Court 3. Then, Olga Blank and Christine Kharkevitch locked down the doubles point for UNCW when they got by the sophomore-junior tandem of Katherine Schofield (Franklin, Tenn.) and Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.) 8-4 on Court 1.
In singles, Schofield and Falcone got some revenge via comeback victories as Falcone won 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) vs. Cameron on Court 6 and Schofield won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 over Kharkevitch on Court 5. However, it was not to be for the Cougars as senior Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.), freshman Mara Argyriou (Limassol, Cyprus), and Maddox all fell in hard-fought three-set battles.
The Cougars will stay in Wilmington for the night but they will have to be up and ready to go early tomorrow morning to take on JMU at 9:30 a.m. at the UNCW Tennis Complex.
