Women?s Tennis Ends Road Trip with Loss to No. 60 Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – College of Charleston women's tennis took to the courts at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex for its third match in as many days. The Cougars fell short with a 7-0 score against the No. 60 Demon Deacons.
“Today wasn't our best performance,” Head Coach Angelo Anastopoulo said. “It may have been because of the amount of travel we've done or because we've played so many matches but we are in no way using that as an excuse. We are using that as motivation to do better in those situations.
Junior Katherine Schofield and senior Jenny Falcone continue to be a bright spot for the Cougars (0-3) as they were up 5-4 at the No. 1 doubles spot before Wake Forest (1-0) claimed the doubles point with wins at the second and third seeds.
In singles competition, Schofield forced the first set into a tiebreak before falling 7-6, (7-3), 6-2 to Samantha Asch on the third court. Falcone returned from a 7-1 first set loss to push the second set into a tiebreak as the fourth seed. Luisa Fernandez eventually won the match 6-1, 7-6 (7-1). Sophomore Mara Argyriou also forced her opponent to go seven games in the first set before dropping 7-5, 6-1 to Xue Zhang as the No. 2 seed.
“We were one-set wonders today,” Anastopoulo said. “We'll have to get better at playing complete matches. We were only able to practice for two days before playing these three matches. Now we have a chance to go back in the lab to really address weaknesses and get back to work
Charleston traveled more than 1,000 miles to face two nationally ranked teams in three different states over the holiday weekend.
CofC will host No. 62 Winthrop in its home opener on Sunday, Feb. 1 at noon.
