HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Despite having four players register double digit scoring efforts, the College of Charleston women's basketball team fell to the Hofstra Pride, 78-53, in their 2014-15 Colonial Athletic Association opener on Sunday at the Mack Sports Center.
Freshman point guard Shiclasia Brown and junior forward Jacqueline Luna-Castro each notched 14 points, while Bre Bolden and Christy Hewatt also chipped in with 11 on the afternoon. The Cougars managed to force 19 turnovers while scoring 18 points in the paint, but were eventually undone by an efficient offensive performance from the hosts, who knocked down shots at a 52% clip. CofC were also second-best on the boards, as Hofstra won the battle on the glass, 43-25.
In a fast-paced first half, it was back-to-back baskets from Hewatt that got the Cougars (2-10) started as CofC managed to hang tough with the Pride at the outset. However, after an early tie, the hosts' 1-2-2 trapping press and effective transition offense led to a 16-2 run, giving Hofstra a 20-6 advantage midway through the opening stanza. A deep triple from Hall and an emphatic and-1 from Brown with the shot clock winding down helped cut in to the deficit, but boosted by consecutive baskets from Jackelle King-Gilchrest, Hofstra rode a late 9-0 run to take a 37-20 lead in to the halftime break.
The early stages of the second half saw Hofstra's advantage quickly extend from 17 to 24 as the host's jumped out to a 50-26 lead at the under-16 media timeout. A comeback looked to be in the works after a corner three from Luna-Castro and transition jumper from Bolden, but the Cougars could get no closer than 17 the rest of the way as Hofstra shot 50% from behind the arc in the second frame to claim the 78-53 victory and move to 8-4 on the season.
Up next for the Cougars is their 2014-15 Colonial Athletic Association home opener versus Delaware, at TD Arena., on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 7:00 p.m.
