BOSTON, Mass. – The College of Charleston volleyball team trailed early in every set on Friday against Northeastern, but battled back each time to claim a 3-1 (25-18, 26-28, 25-21, 25-18) win at Cabot Center.
“I thought we played well,” head coach Jason Kepner said. “We didn't start out each set the way we want but we fought back and found a way to get the job done on the road. I also want to thank coach (Ralph) Lundy for bringing the men's soccer team to our game to support us, it really means a lot and we wish him and his team the best of luck at their game on Saturday.”
Melissa Morello posted five aces, 15 digs and recorded 23 kills, the sixth time she has reached the 20-kill plateau in her career. She is just 31 kills shy of breaking the College of Charleston career top 10 list for career kills.
After handling the first set with ease, the Cougars (13-10, 5-4 CAA) were tested in the second. Northeastern jumped out to a 5-0 lead and separated themselves by as may as eight points at 14-6 before the teams settled in to back-and-forth battle. CofC closed width, eventually taking a 22-21 lead on a kill by Devon Rachel. The Huskies, however, took four of the last five points to win the set.
Northeastern (4-20, 1-8) claimed a 7-4 advantage in the third set, but a kill by Kennedy Madison sparked a 8-3 Cougar run capped by consecutive aces from Melissa Morello. With the set tied at 20-20, Rachel landed a kill and CofC cruised to a 25-21 win on the back of a 6-1 run. The story remained the same in the fourth frame as CofC trailed 5-1 but stormed back to take 24 of the last 38 points.
Rachel finished the game with 13 kills while Madison tallied nine. Allison Beckman recorded 31 assists in the match and Mackenzie Cooler chipped in with 11.
College of Charleston returns to action on Sunday as the team travels to face Hofstra at 1 p.m.
