HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The College of Charleston volleyball never could find its rhythm falling to Hofstra 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-19) at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center on Sunday.
“Hofstra played well, but we didn't help ourselves,” head coach Jason Kepner said. “We've got to find a way to be more consistent. I thought there were stretches in the match where we played well, we just didn't string enough of those stretches together.”
Both teams came out swinging in the first set. CofC hit .333 but couldn't overcome Hofstra's attack, which hit at a .405 clip. The set was up for grabs until the Pride started an 8-5 run to close out a 25-20 victory. Melissa Morello claimed seven of her 15 kills in the second set, but with the set tied 10-10, the Cougars conceded eight of the next 10 points.
Despite leading the third frame 4-1, CofC couldn't keep pace as Hofstra reeled off six straight points en route to a 25-18 win to take the match.
As a team, Hofstra turned in 12 blocks and hit .310 for the match. The College struggled with 20 attack errors while the Pride (16-9, 7-3 CAA) committed just 12. Allison Beckman finished the match with 32 assists for CofC while Kayla Tronick and Krissy Mummey ended with three blocks each.
College of Charleston (13-11, 5-5) returns to action with a pair of road matches next weekend. The Cougars take on Towson on Friday before a trip to James Madison wraps up a four-match road swing.
