TOWSON, Md. – The College of Charleston volleyball team couldn't contain a relentless Towson attack, falling 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-17) at SECU Arena on Friday.
“We certainly didn't execute well enough to win,” head coach Jason Kepner said. “When you are facing a good team like Towson, you have to execute the game plan and minimize your mistakes, we didn't do that.”
The Cougars (13-12, 5-6 CAA) leapt to a 10-6 lead in the opening set but an 8-1 Towson run quickly created a 14-11 deficit. Later, consecutive kills by Kennedy Madison and an ace from Melissa Morello tied the set at 20-20. The Tigers took seven of the last 12 points to win the frame, 27-25.
In the second set, a kill by Kayla Tronick gave the Cougars a 17-16 lead. However, it would be the last time CofC led in the set. Towson claimed the next three points before a kill by Madison and an ace from Mackenzie Cooler tied things at 20-all. Grace Rebarchak made it 21-21 before the Tigers took the last four points en route to a 25-21 victory.
Coming out of the break, CofC took a 3-2 lead on a kill from Madison. With a kill, Devon Rachel pulled the Cougars within one at 5-4, but that was a close as The College would come in the final set, falling 25-17. Towson (22-4, 9-3) hit .526 in the frame and .383 for the match while CofC swung at a .208 clip led by Rachel at .367 with 13 kills. Morello finished with 12 kills.
College of Charleston travels to take on league-leading James Madison (21-3, 11-0) in its next match on Sunday. First serve is set for noon.
